At the beautifully produced and staged Byron Bay Writers Festival Poetry Evening on Friday 7 August, Maxwell Ryan was announced as the winner of the annual Poetry Prize. Max lives in New Brighton in the Northern Rivers Region and was awarded first prize for his poem Jim, which he read during the event. Runners up were Alexandra Bates from Sydney with Junction and Andrew Slattery from Newcastle with Black Bat Burn. Their winning works were selected from more than 250 poems received from 91 poets around the country.
As part of their prize, the poems were read at the Byron Bay Writers Festival Poetry Evening in the company of some of the Festival’s most esteemed literary guests including poets Robert Adamson, Robert Gray and Mark Tredinnick and Australian performance poet, David (Ghostboy) Stavanger, creating an intimate evening of lyrical and provocative entertainment. The event is spoken of as a highlight of this year’s off site Festival program.
Thank you to our judges for their enthusiastic assessment of a record number of entries for this year’s prize. Max walked away with a $500 cheque while the runners up each received $150.
